The Grammar Stage

Reading opens the world.

First grade is the year a child learns to read. Direct phonics and daily oral reading give way to the first real books, cursive is formed letter by letter, and Saxon math builds a sure sense of number. History begins close to home, with the Native peoples, the Pilgrims, and the First Thanksgiving.

Bible & Language Arts

Daily Bible instruction and doctrine alongside the building blocks of literacy: penmanship, reading, phonics, spelling, grammar, and beginning writing.

History & Geography

Early American history — Native Americans, the Pilgrims, and the First Thanksgiving — with beginning map skills and the continents, oceans, and colonies.

Mathematics & Science

Saxon math with times tables and early division, and science surveying God’s creation from the solar system to plants, mammals, and reptiles.

Music & Art

Choral music by the Kodaly method and the essential elements of drawing and art — line, shape, value, color, and texture.

Physical Education

Twice-weekly exercises, games, and fitness that build teamwork and sportsmanship, with field trips and classroom visitors.
