The Kindergarten

All truth is God’s truth.

Geneva kindergarten emphasizes art, music, and academics in an orderly, loving, and Godly environment. Every day begins with prayer and singing praise to God from a thankful heart, and each week we gather for chapel to worship and learn from His Holy Word.

Because all truth (and all goodness and beauty) is God’s, we see the same virtues at work across the whole curriculum. In art, children practice making something beautiful while refining the motor skills that carry over into handwriting, cursive, math, and map work. A skill learned well here serves them everywhere.

At Geneva Academy, the overall goal of kindergarten is to create the foundation for your child’s love and desire to learn at school and to instill in children at a very young age the crucial concept that God’s truth, beauty, and goodness can be discovered in all aspects of life. The K5 program at Geneva focuses on the growth and development of the whole child.

Bible, character & the Geneva Credo.

God’s Word is the basis of both what we learn and how, the form of a respectful, nurturing classroom and the standard by which we gently correct. Bible instruction begins at Creation and works through memorable Old and New Testament lessons. Students memorize the Geneva Credo, learning the basics of the faith alongside these character virtues:

  • Contentment
  • Obedience
  • Self-Control
  • Patience
  • Joy
  • Courage
  • Respect
  • Truthfulness
  • Thankfulness

Phonics & reading

We emphasize direct phonics instruction using the SWR program by Wanda Sanseri. Kindergarten covers every letter sound and the most common phonograms and spelling rules by year’s end, readying students for the Reading Challenge in the later grades. They also hear wonderful literature read aloud, encouraged at home and with our reading-partner volunteers.

Mathematics

Our math follows the age-appropriate scope of Math-U-See’s Primer, supplemented with Saxon 1. Children count and build numeracy, understand place value, read and write numerals, add and subtract with concrete models, tell time on an analog clock, measure length, use halves and fourths, and skip-count by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, and 100’s, wondering at the way God uses number to make His creation beautiful.
